Golden Girl Estelle Getty Dies at 84

I was so sad to learn that my favorite Golden Girls actress, Estelle Getty, died yesterday, just three days shy of her 85th birthday.

She was nominated for seven Emmys for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series from 1986 to 1992, but she won only in 1988. She also won a Golden Globe for Actress in a Leading Role, Musical or Comedy Series, in 1986 and was nominated in 1985 and 1991.

Getty, although known for playing the oldest character on The Golden Girls, was actually younger than actress Bea Arthur, who played her daughter.

Getty suffered from Lewy body dementia and osteoporosis. According to her manager, she died of natural causes on July 22, 2008.
