Would You Like 6 Bajillion Calories With That?
Earlier this year, New York became the first city to mandate that chain restaurants display calorie counts along with the name and price of food items to help consumers make informed choices about what they eat. Shortly thereafter, NYC hipsters started dropping from heart attacks after learning how many calories were in their daily “healthy” noshes. Okay, I’m kidding about the heart attack part, but I think some palpitations had to be going on.
Some caloric shockers from my favorite places to grab a snack on the go, Panera and Starbucks, include…
- Panera Pumpkin Muffin, 6.5 oz … 530 Calories
- Panera Reduced Fat Wild Blueberry Muffin, 4.5 oz … 360 Calories
- Panera Wild Blueberry Muffin (not reduced fat), 4.5 oz … 400 Calories
- Panera Portobello & Mozzarella on Focaccia, 11.25 oz … 650 Calories
- Paneral Broccoli Cheddar Soup, 8 oz … 320 Calories
- Starbucks Caffè Vanilla Frappuccino® Blended Coffee, 16 oz, 2% milk, with whip … 430 Calories
- Starbucks Iced Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, 16 0z, 2% milk, with whip … 510 Calories
- Starbucks Artisan Cheese Danish … 440 Calories
- Starbucks Blueberry Streusel Muffin … 360 Calories

Great article Kristen!
Kinda eye opening to realize what the foods we’re snaking on are what up of!
A tip I have heard of is using sweetner instead of sugar in any coffees or teas ordered at chain restaurants.
All the best, and thanks for an informative article!

The thing that worries me about sweetners is the artificial content, so I generally prefer to go with regular sugar and just a little less of it, you know? I’d rather stick with natural. That’s just me, though. I know lots of folks who swear by artificial sweetners.

Very true.. I actually am a bit odd and stick with sweetners for tea but when I have coffee I’ll use sugar.

WHOA.
I love Panera. Or should I rephrase that and say I loved Panera. The muffins! The half sandwich/half soup with the apple and a drink and a muffin! That has to be over 2000 calories for a single meal.
But yeah, it’s stuff people NEED to know even if they don’t want that kind of information. And I thought Panera was GOOD for you. It’s a salad or sandwich or soup! How could you go wrong with that?
