KK’s Live Healthy Journal: Rilo Kiley Rocked the House
I was totally right about the dancing thing. After walking several blocks from our car and then standing in line for 40 minutes (they pushed the doors back 30 minutes for no apparent reason despite the 90+-degree heat, grr) and THEN standing around for another 40 minutes before the music started, we then rocked out to 4 bands in one of the best concerts I have ever been to. We were on our feet for more than 5 hours, the majority of which we were dancing. Well, I was, anyway. Hubby’s not much of a dancer. I guess it’s a guy thing.
Here’s who we got to hear:
- Benji Hughes - Never heard of him but were impressed with his raw voice, which was a cross between Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra (we couldn’t agree which), Nick Cave, and William S. Burroughs. His lyrics, on the other hand, well, I have to say that a 3-minute song about the bird in his yard REALLY didn’t impress me and his rhymes were painfully predictable. Oh, and his website copy sucks.
- Thao with the Get Down Stay Down - Never heard of her, but Thao Nguyen totally blew us away. She’s this tiny woman with a guitar, and the energy and voice that come out of her are completely unexpected. And HER lyrics were great. We left with two of her CDs and a shirt.
- David Rawlings and Gillian Welch - Him, you probably don’t know, or don’t realize you know. Her, you know from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. They were unannounced until about 10 minutes before they got on stage, and it was a GREAT performance. I love me some bluegrass.
- Rilo Kiley - We discovered RK maybe 6 months ago, and didn’t realize until the show that they have actually been around since 1999. Where have we been? They were unbelievably good, and after all of the great music we’d already heard by the time they took the stage, it was just the icing on the cake.
I had two beers, which is unusual on a regular night but about standard for a concert. What was really odd, though, was that for the first time in my life I found myself wondering how many calories were in the bottle I was drinking. According to Beer100.com, there were 135 calories in my Yuengling Lager and AnneCollins.com tells me that there were 150 calories in my Newcastle Brown Ale. I guess that’s not AWFUL, right? But still…
After getting about 3 and a half hours of sleep last night, I’m not feeling much like doing any kind of workout, so I think I’m (gulp) going to skip it for today. I need to recover.
Weight:
Goal Weight: 121 pounds
Workout: Still recovering from the concert
Meals: Special K with strawberries; salami and muenster with mustard, lettuce, and tomato on whole wheat; barbecue chicken, mac and cheese.
