Wrapping Up the Lively Women Weight Loss Surgery Mini-Series: When Is Surgical Weight Loss Really Appropriate?
Over the last week, we’ve explored some of the most common weight loss procedures in the US today in a three-part series on exploring types of weight loss surgery:
- Liposuction - Really a cosmetic procedure, not a weight loss surgery
- Gastric Lap Band - Reversible with a strong track record of results and relatively fewer risks
- Gastric Bypass - Major surgery with proven results but lots of risks and side effects
Although I mentioned it in each post in the series, I cannot stress enough that surgical solutions are NOT the right choice for everyone who wants to lose weight. They’re not an easy answer, and they don’t just take the weight off overnight. Well, liposuction does, but that’s a cosmetic procedure, not true weight loss surgery.
The only time surgeries like these are appropriate are when all other options have been unsuccessful. If you’re obese despite working closely with your doctor, a nutritionist, and a fitness expert, and there is no underlying condition like a thyroid problem causing your weight to remain well above where you should be for maximum health, that is the only time weight loss surgery is potential option.
Surgery is (a) costly, (b) dangerous, and (c) a life-changing event. Talk to your doctor very frankly about the best way to tackle overweight and obesity in your life, and get a second opinion. YOU are in charge of your health. Get informed and make smart choices.
Do you agree with my stance on surgical weight loss? Let me know. Leave a comment.

Even though I technically qualify for weight loss surgery (I’m 100 pounds overweight), I’m terrified to do it. I gained the weight thanks to mindless eating, pregnancy, depression, and stress. I’m not convinced surgery will prevent me from getting fat again. I have to believe I can conquer this on my own.
