In Honor of Mental Health Awareness: Are You REALLY Happy?
“The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates”Only a fool looks at the finger that points to the sky.” — Translated from the French, from Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain“We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Stop delaying the amazing things that you were put on this earth to do. Don’t sell the world short.” — Wendy Piersall quoting Marianne Williamson, at SOBCon08 in Chicago, IL
Today, the b5media Health and Wellness Channel is all about Mental Health Awareness — and I have a challenge for you: Look at where you are, really look. Now, answer me this: Are you happy?
Your life does not have to be perfect for you to be happy, but it does need to be purposeful. What is your purpose? Are you living it?
This month, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about what I’m doing with my life, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve allowed myself to get into the habit of going through the motions instead of really, really living. I feel tired. I feel burned out. I feel bored. I’m too young to feel that way. This how I felt before I quit my job with the soul-sucking commute two years ago. That’s not good.
What about you? Are you satisfied with the way things are going for you right now? Are you satisfied with your job? With your relationships with family and friends? Do you feel weighed down?
It’s not selfish to want to be happy, to want to feel fulfilled. In fact, you SHOULD want those things. Life is about living, not about existing. If you could change anything about your life, what would it be? And what’s stopping you?

If I could change anything in my life — and I can — it would be to have more fun. Fun, fun, fun. I spent so much time and energy building my client list that now that I have enough freelance work, I feel like I should be working as much as I can while the work is coming in. I’m burning out, too, and I’m not very fun to be around these days.
I had a small epiphany when I watched the movie “Into the Wild” (which I didn’t think I’d like at all). It reminded me of how I felt when I was younger: free. I’d like to scale back on work this summer and do more backpacking and road-tripping, to remind myself that work is only a small part of my identity.
Thanks for the inspiring post. I look forward to reading about your own epiphanies.
