    I bake with applesauce.

Specifically, I replace oil with applesauce in my cakes and cookies. Though there’s some health benefits associated with olive oil, too much of it is not good. Plus olive oil is much more expensive than applesauce. I absolutely love brownies made with applesauce - they are still delicious, and very chocolatey. Yum!

Does white flour have more cholesterol than whole grain? Or are you saying that whole grain is just better for your heart?

    Great idea, Melinda!

Peggy, whole grains in any form (baking with whole wheat flour, eating whole wheat bread, having oatmeal for breakfast, etc) are better for your heart than refined products like white flour, so replacing white flour with whole wheat is just one way to get more whole grains in your diet. Does that answer your question?

Kristen, thanks. I usually only use flour for things like cornbread and dessert. I try to get the organic, unbleached flour, but it’s still probably not as good for you as the whole grain stuff. I’ll have to try it.

Organic is great, Peggy! Get the organic whole grain variety and you are good to go!
