Gas Station Condom Dispenser Preaches Abstinence and Monogamy

by Kristen King on April 19th, 2008

Updated with a photo!

hygeia condom machine dispenserWell, this was a new one! I’m not usually big on using service station rest rooms, but I got caught in traffic on the way home from a meeting (followed by a Panera-based work session, yum!) in Northern Virginia today, and I had to pee like you wouldn’t believe. As I was wrapping things up at the Valero that saved me from what would have been a very embarassing story, I came face to face with the most unusual personal care product machine I have ever seen.

From a distance, it looked pretty standard. Metal. Silver knob. Slot for quarters. Tampons (ob). Condoms (ribbed and multicolored).

It was the label that was odd:

Although no contraceptive can provide complete protection, Hygeia Condoms, when properly used, may prevent the transmission of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The best method of AIDS prevention is abstinence before marriage and a monogamous relationship during marriage. Hygeia Condoms are available here for your privacy and convenience. This dispenser serviced at frequent intervals.

Uh, okay.

Is this a Southern thing, or what?
