India is in the midst of a catastrophic epidemic of smoking deaths, which is expected to cause about one million (10 lakh)* deaths a year during the 2010s — including one in five of all male deaths and one in 20 of all female deaths at ages 30-69. Cigarette Smoking Linked [to] Heart Attacks In Early 50’s For People With Common Gene Variant
The proverbial cigarette after a Valentine’s Day snuggle can prematurely end a love affair, as new evidence emerges that a common defect in a gene significantly increases a smoker’s risk of an early heart attack. Researchers say that as much as 60 to 70 percent of the population has a gene defect that delivers a one-two punch to smokers: In a recent published study, heavy smokers with this common gene variant experienced a heart attack around the age of 52. The World Health Organization (WHO) today warned that 1 billion people worldwide could die of tobacco-related causes this century unless “urgent action” is taken. …[They predict] that, without intervention, tobacco will kill more than 8 million people every year by 2030, and 80% of those deaths will occur in developing countries. Smoking Increases Breast Cancer Risk Based On Genes, Study Shows
Women who smoke and have a specific genetic makeup are at significant risk for the development of breast cancer, according to a recent study published by the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. Read more >>>
Smoking May Wreak Havoc on Sleep: Restless Sleep More Common Among Cigarette Smokers Than Nonsmokers
The effects of smoking may include worse sleep due to overnight nicotine withdrawal. So say scientists from Johns Hopkins University. They studied 40 smokers who reported smoking at least 20 cigarettes per day and claimed to have no health problems. Read more >>>
