The Facts on Fasting

by Kristen King on January 31st, 2008

Don't Fall into the Trap of FastingAngelique over at Breaking the Mirror has a great post up about fasting and how it may not actually be all it’s cracked up to be. In her words:

Ironically, fasting isn’t as tough as it seems. You aren’t always hungry when you fast; in fact, the body quickly adjusts and hunger pangs tend to subside, at least at first. Add to that an unnatural “high” that comes from your body slowly eating itself and you can be quickly sold on the premise that The Fast must be good for you.

Fasting has always kind of freaked me out, to be honest, but I agree with Angelique’s ED observations: fasting is “the ultimate in control.” During my more actively disordered eating stages, depriving myself of food meant I was strong, powerful. And it still does, though now I am able to recognize how dangerous it is and, most of the time, make myself eat something.

The thing about fasting is that you think you’re in control of the fast, but really, it’s controlling you. Break the cycle.
