Women’s Health Warning: Blood Clot Risk and the Birth Control Patch
A new study demonstrated increased risk of blood clots in women using the contraceptive skin patch, trade name Ortho Evra, compared with women using oral contraceptives (aka "the pill"). This information has been added to the product label.
Now, before you panic, it’s important to realize that virtually all hormonal birth control on the market to date carries an increased risk of blood clots, and smoking increases the risk. So if you’re prone to blood clots, for one reason or another, talk with your doctor about other options. And if you’re using any form of hormonal contraception, DO NOT SMOKE.
