5 Ways to Wipe Out Anxiety in Moments of Stress and Panic
When you’re mid-freakout, it’s easy to forget that you do have some control over the situation. Here are 5 things you can do to get a handle on your anxiety, courtesy of CNN Living, as explained by yours truly:
- Admit to yourself that you’re feeling anxious. Trying to pretend that you’re not will only stress you out more, so just let yourself be a little freaked out and remind yourself that it will pass.
- Stop trying to be perfect. Letting go of perfection is an immediate way to reduce anxiety since a whole lot of it comes from fears of not being "good enough." What is the worst thing that can happen if you aren’t completely perfect? When you think about it rationally, you’ll see that it’s not really that bad. Remember, no one is perfect.
- Stop being so nice. Did you agree to something you didn’t particularly want to do, or are you keeping your mouth shut about something that’s really bugging you because you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings? It’s definitely good to be concerned about how your actions affect others, and it’s even good to cultivate a spirit of self-sacrifice when it means that everyone’s benefiting, including you, but it is not good to agree to things that make you uncomfortable. Practice saying no and standing up for yourself, and you’ll notice big changes.
- Take a walk. Focus on your physical movement instead of what’s stressing you out. Reconnecting with your body will allow you to relax.
- Face your fear. Whatever is freaking you out, work up to dealing with it. If you’re nervous about cleaning out your closet, start with a section of 10 hangers and work on that little bit, and then take a break. If you’re worried about public speaking, make a small presentation to three or four friends or give a toast at dinner.
