Are You Standing in the Way of Your Own Happiness? I Challenge You to Make a Change!
We all want to be happy and successful, but sometimes our attitude contradicts what we say we want, and that gets in the way of the happiness we desire. Have you ever heard these phrases coming out of your mouth, or have you thought them?
- I hate this stupid job.
- Why does this always happen to me?
- I never get anything right.
- God, why am I so fat?
- Fill-in-the-blank sucks.
- So-and-so is so stupid.
Negativity is draining, and complaining about coworkers, other drivers, your mom, your partner, your siblings, the girl who waited on you at lunch, the weather, the television selections, etc., etc., etc. is poisonous to your happiness.
I have a challenge for you in 2008: Stop complaining.
"But Kristen, I’m not a complainer."
I’m pretty sure you are. I know I am. In fact, I can think of only about three people of all the people I know who aren’t chronic complainers, and it’s exhausting to be around all that negativity all the time!
Beginning January 1, my husband and I have agreed to do a 30-day version of the Complaint Free World no-complaining challenge, and I want you to do it, too.
Here’s how it works:
- Sign up for the challenge by e-mailing me your Full Name, Mailing Address, and E-mail Address, and I will send you a FREE Complaint-Free World bracelet to wear throughout the challenge. I’ve already ordered them and am looking forward to sending them out to Lively Women readers.
- Pick your start date and start keeping track. Make a note of which wrist you’re wearing your bracelet on. The goal is to make it 21 or 30 straight days without complaining. Every time you catch yourself complaining, move your bracelet to the other wrist and start your count over again.
- Look for encouraging posts and occassional e-mails from me to help you stick with it. Breaking a bad habit is difficult, but I know we can all do it together!

I happened across your blog but loved the post. Someone once challenged me, “What are you going to do about it?” when I was complaining about a work situation.
I’ve been asking myself that question ever since. It’s empowering when you take control of your life!

That’s very generous of you to support your audience with bracelets like that!
It’s important to note that simply not complaining won’t necessarily make your situation any better. If your job sucks, or you hate your weight, CHANGE IT! New Year’s is a great time for resolutions. Start your 21- or 30-day trial of not complaining by making a list of your current complaints and making executable action plans for improving or fixing those complaints.
I have a guide on my website for setting and planning for successful New Year’s Resolutions that might be of help for this.

So true. The hardest part is changing your internal talk. It’s all about choices in life. Do we chose to be happy or do we chose to be negative? Sometimes all it takes is a few changes in work and what not. Great post!
