Blog Action Day 2007: The Environment

by Kristen King on October 15th, 2007

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day October 15 is Blog Action Day, and this year’s topic is the environment. How is this related to women’s health? Girl, if you’re living on this planet, the world around you has a direct impact on your health and well-being, both physical and psychological.

How would your health change if, today…

… every car/truck/plane/train/etc. were replaced with a low-emission alternative?

… everyone stopped smoking forever?

… we made recycling mandatory and stopped cutting down trees for paper?

… chemical pesticides were banned?

… organic meat, dairy, and produce became the norm?

… littering became a thing of the past?

It’s overly optimistic to think that these things would just happen instantly, but if we all made an effort to make small environmentally conscious changes in our daily lives, the impact would be enormous.

Here are some things you can do to help the environment and your health:

  • Recycle, even if it’s not required in your community. Your local government will be able to if home pick-up is available or direct you to a convenience center if it’s not.
  • Walk instead of driving, or at least carpool or take public transportation. If it means driving part of the way and grouping it the rest, so be it. You’re still reducing emissions.
  • Get a Brita and a Nalgene bottle instead of bottled water.Replace the lightbulbs in your home with high-efficiency bulbs.
  • Turn off the heat/AC when you don’t really need it.
  • Insulate your attic.
  • Don’t litter, and pick up trash whenever you see it.
  • Consider a hybrid for your next vehicle.
