5 Things That Blew Me Away at Bodies: The Exhibition
This weekend, my husband and I visited Bodies: The Exhibition with a group of friends during its last days in the DC area. I was amazed by how incredible we are! Here are the top things that stuck with me:
- The human skin. One exhibit was literally the skin from a whole body. I was alarmed by how much it looked like a purse or luggage or something, and amazed at how similar/different it looked compared with my own living skin.
- The circulatory system. Holy crap, veins, arteries, capillaries, and all are insane! It’s one thing to be able to see your veins through your skin and to know that there are blood vessels everywhere, but it’s another to see all of that minus the rest of the body.
- The human lungs. Particularly healthy lungs compared with smoker’s lungs. They were side by side, and the smoker’s lungs were half the size of the healthy lungs, and a completely different color and texture. And right next to them was a large clear bin where people were dumping their cigarettes after seeing the difference.
- The uterus. I couldn’t find it. I must have looked like a total moron with my face in this woman’s abdomen trying to locate the uterus, and when I finally did figure it out, I was astonished at how small it is, particularly since one of my best friends had a baby a few days ago and he was IN HER UTERUS. I shudder, I’m telling you.
- The entire fetal development gallery. Everything from embryos just a few days old to fetuses at 28 weeks, you could see it all. And they were real babies that had died in utero of natural causes, so it’s not like it was some artist’s rendering. I’m not about making this a politcal platform, but I’m telling you, if you’re okay with abortion now, you won’t be after seeing exactly how human a baby is in the womb, and how quickly.
