Product Review: Special K2O Protein Water Powered Mix
To say that I was wildly unimpressed with Kellogg’s Special K2O Protein Water would be an understatement. But just after one of my readers suggested that I give the powdered mix a try, my contact over at Kellogg’s offered me some free samples, which conveniently arrived yesterday. So far, I’ve tried the Pink Lemonade and Iced Tea flavors, and I actually really like them. (I haven’t attempted the Strawberry Kiwi yet and I have this suspicion that I’m not going to be a big fan…)
I always water down my juices, so I did the mix with 23.6 ounces of water (an ethos water bottle, if you’re wondering) instead of the recommended 16.9 and it was just about right. Whereas the pre-mixed bottles literally made me gag, I’ve actually consumed a full bottle of each of the lemonade and tea varieties and really enjoyed them. Still not wild about the large number of ingredients in “water,” but their target audience is more the Crystal Light crowd, who’s used to drinking water with a lot of other stuff in it.
So as far as I’m concerned, if you’re looking for a low-cal, sugar-free protein boost on the go and you dig the fruity flavors, this is a great choice that packs 5 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein with just 30 calories. It should be in your local grocery soon if it’s not there already.
Have you tried Special K2O Protein Water in bottles or the mix? Leave your opinion in the comments.

First time reader- found you on a google search. Hi!
I tried the lemonade and the strawberry kiwi and liked them. I don’t care for Crystal Light (too sweet, gives me a heacache) so I was surprised that this was pretty good. They claim it makes you feel fuller longer. Well, hm- I’d estimate that it holds down your appetite about 10-15 minutes longer than an equal amount of plain water would. Not exactly an appetite panacea, but it’s enough to let you get a healthy meal put together without snacking away all your good dieting efforts.

Oh, and I was talking about the MIX, not the bottled stuff. I agree with you that the version with sugar is awful– makes no sense diet-wise.

I buy the mix and add more water also. I really like them. It helps me drink more water.

I buy the tea mix but use 1 liter of water–and it’s still pretty sweet for me! If I use plain water I don’t ever manage to drink it all, so the mix is a great way to get fiber and fluids. I think I get less hungry because I’ve filled up on fluids!

Does anyone have any concerns with any of the ingredients, such as artificial flavors, dyes, and artificial sweetner? Just curious.

Hey!
I just tried the K2O Iced Tea Mix…I agree with others that it’s too strong fo a 16.9 oz bottle of water; I used half a packet per bottle and it’s pretty good. I’m a long-time caffeine-free diet Pepsi drinker trying to get healthier and lose weight. This satisfies my craving for flavor, not just “plain” water. The protein and fiber elements are a great plus! Certainly the ease of use is a real positive. We’ll see how long it keeps me “fuller” as I use it for a week or so!

@butterfly - I do worry about stuff like that, but I also limit my intake of products with non-natural ingredients (like sodas, artificially flavored cereals, and stuff like this).
@sandi - yes, a great replacement for soda since it has both protein and fiber. I’m glad it’s working for you so far. But keep in mind that since you’re using less powder, like I am, you won’t feel as full as someone using the whole packet because you’re getting less protein and fiber in one shot. Make sense?
@patricia - I can’t find the powder ANYWHERE near me, but the bottles are at Wal-Mart in my area and also at some of the grocery stores. Check the diet aisle or near the pharmacy.

The only thing I dont get is how the total calories are 30, while it has 7g carb (7×4=28kcal) plus 5g protein (5×4=20kcal) which should total up to 48kcal (~50 kcal)
Can somebody explain?

I love the tea and lemon flavors - I think the lemon tastes like a melted “lemonhead” candy! I don’t think it really makes me feel full but it certainly makes me not feel like I’m gonna throw up waiting to eat (with my job I tend to not get regular breaks and have LOOONG stretches between meals). I like the lemon pre-mixed better and the tea powdered. I don’t care much for the “tropical” one. When I use the powder I also use extra water so it’s not quite so jarring in flavor. I feel like all these types of mixes/drinks are kinda expensive for what they are so we don’t buy them often but we’ve found them at Kroger (a regional grocery), Target and WalMart in both forms. They feature the bottles 10 for $10 at Kroger sometimes and we stock up then.
