The Sickie Returns! And Some Tips for Other Sickies

by Kristen King on September 5th, 2007

Phew, I’m glad that bout of illness is mostly over with. I say mostly because I still have a nasty cough, but my stomach is back to normal, I have a real appetite again, and no fever or headache for DAYS! Woo! Now I just have to swallow the sick feeling I have when I think about how much catching up to do!

One nice thing about being sick is that I got some great advice to alleviate some of my symptoms. My two favorite tips came from the same person, a client of mine who is an absolute guru when it comes to natural remedies.

For stomach upset, particularly diarrhea and cramping:

In addition to staying hydrated with lots of liquids, begin an acidophilus regimen to build up the good bacteria in your system. Acidophilus is a probiotic that promotes healthy digestion, regularity, and overall tummy goodness. You can find it in yogurt, but best to take it straight in capsule form and avoid the dairy products until thing settle down. Be sure to keep your acidophilus refrigerated so it stays active.

For coughing, especially with congestion:

A hot drink based on an Ayruvedic approach: a cup of hot water, a tablespoon of honey (raw, local honey is best) , a lemon wedge, and a pinch of salt. Drink it, savor it, breathe in the steam. Within an hour, you should feel major relief and any congestion you have will loosen up so you can cough it up and spit it out. (Be sure not to swallow the phlegm — ick!)

I am glad that you are feeling better! Do you have anything for a week long headache, the kind that makes you want to lay flat an sit still all day long. The Tylenol, Motrin and Excedrin isn’t doing it :). But seriously, welcome back to the world of the living! Have a great day.

Hmm… When I get bad headaches, the only thing that helps me is Aleve, which I reserve for only the worst pain. Drink lots of fluids and try 2 Aleve before bedtime. It works for me, and I hope it will make things better at least a little for you!!!
