Plastic Surgery and Gastric Lap Band? For a 13-Year-Old? Are They Joking?
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the headline at That’s Fit, but apparently it’s true! A 220-lb 12-year-old underwent liposuction and a tummy tuck, but when the 40 lbs she lost came back just a year later, she had an additional surgery to get a gastric lap band.
As Martha said in her post,
I think this is absolutely appalling. Obviously, quick fixes aren’t working (she gained almost all of the weight back after her first one, after all) so have her parents ever heard of teaching healthy habits? How about diet and exercise? There’s no reason why a healthy 13-year-old shouldn’t be able to lose weight the old fashioned way, Furthermore, why are her parents reinforcing the belief that she needs to be thin to be happy?
What is wrong with these people??? Apparently because this surgery isn’t allowed in the US for someone so young (gee, I wonder why), they went to Mexico to get it done. Are you kidding me? She’s 13 years old! Take her to a nutritionist and enroll her in dance classes or something. Don’t let her (or encourage her to) get major surgery because you’re too lazy to teach her healthy lifestyle habits! Arg, this makes me so mad.

Anon, you and your parents need to sit down and have a serious talk with your pediatrician. Nine times out of ten, weight loss can be achieved with NONSURGICAL lifestyle changes like a better diet and more exercise. You need to exhaust those options first. If you’re eating a perfect diet and exercising according to medical recommendations and don’t lose a pound, it may be a hormonal or chemical issue. Very seldom is surgery the only option to lose weight. And especially in someone so young, going straight for the surgery is a terrible idea.
Now before you tell me, “But I do eat right and exercise!” I need to point out that a lot of people think they’re doing the right things when in actuality they’re not. You need to consult a registered dietitian and a medical professional who can help you evaluate your nutritional situation and your level of physical activity.

Im 13 and i want this lapband done aswell…i have aleady seen two dieticians and a doctor who said its a good idea…im morbidly obese and seems great that i might people to actually shop at a normal store and not a custom store. My parents are with me all the way…not because they are weird but they have seen how i get bullied…they know the pain im going through…my mum also had the surgery and it worked out great…i reckon they should be doing younger like on 10 year olds…before you get all angry just feel what it would be like to be really big…some of us just wanna have a life and our weight is stopping us…
Types of Weight Loss Surgery: Examining the Possibilities — Gastric Lap Band

[…] Who is a good candidate for gastric lap band surgery? Typical criteria include being severely obese (ie, a BMI of 40) or being at least 100 pounds overweight, age 18-55, no success with nonsurgical weight loss techniques such as diet and exercise or medication, and low surgical risk. Depending on the surgeon, older and younger people may be eligible for the procedure. I’ve written previously about a 13-year-old who underwent the lap band procedure. […]
