Home Remedies for Burns
You can tell what kind of day I’ve had when I post about injuries, can’t you? Snake bites the other day, now burns…
It all started when I had the bright idea to make myself a BLT for dinner. It sounds simple enough, but now I’ve got three small first- or second-degree burns on my right hand and arm, and my house still reeks of smoke. I mean, I knew bacon was bad for me, but I didn’t realize it was quite this bad for me.
So here’s what I already knew and what I just learned about treating minor burns.
- Immediately remove the burning substance, grease in this case, so it stops burning you. Makes sense.
- Cool the burn, but don’t ice it. Shocking your skin by taking it from super hot to super cold isn’t a good idea, so use cool or even slightly warm water since that will lower the temp without going too far.
- Keep the burn clean, but don’t scrub it.
- Use some milk to soothe your burned skin.* (I knew a milk-soaked cotton ball would relieve irritation from minor scrapes, and reduce redness after a disastrous eyebrow wax, but this was a new use.)
- Treatment with Preparation H can dramatically speed burn healing.* Who knew?
And now to nurse my wounds.

My burn treatment of choice is lavender. It works wonders. If you put it on the burn in it’s pure form it will suck the heat right out and prevent a blister from forming. Water it down in a spray bottle and it’s better than Aloe for sunburn.

Found your site looking for burns…For me and my kids I take a safety pin sanitize it and burst the the blister to prevent liquid accumulation under the skin. Burns heal quicker.
