One Lively Sunday Night: “I’m With the Band”
“I’m with the band.” Who knew how much fun four little words could be? Last night, I got the chance to find out while hanging out with Army of Freshmen bassist Kai Dodson and the rest of the crew on the Get Happy 2007 tour: Bowling for Soup, Melee, and Quietdrive.
How did I get so lucky? Kai and my husband, Jesse (who loves French Bulldog Sherman, owned by Chris Burney of Bowling for Soup), worked together back in the day, so we got the hook-up when he came to Richmond, just 30 minutes from our place, this weekend.
All of the bands put on an amazing show (of course, I am partial to AOF), and I couldn’t believe how genuinely interested they were in hanging out with the fans afterward. They chilled out on the floor for a good hour and a half after the show ended, signing autographs, taking pictures, and just chatting with the people who showed up.
I’m considerably less cool than my husband, but we managed to have fun anyway. And get this: We stayed out until almost 1. On a work night. (Gasp! I know.) And I had two beers. (Jesse: “And that martini!” Me: “Shut up! I don’t want to sound like a lush at work!”) And I fought claustrophobia long enough to hang with BFS briefly in the recirculated, secondhand-smoke-filled air of their rocktastic tour bus. All of which are probably why I felt like crap all day today. (Either that, or the fact that we thought it would be cool and kitschy to have lunch at Iron Skillet yesterday. Note to self: Chicken fried steak at the truck stop = bad idea.)
All around, it was a great time. The guys are heading up the East Coast as we speak, soon to move to the Midwest, so be sure to check out the tour dates to find out when they’re coming to your area. Yeah, I got in for free, because, you know, I was with the band, but I think it was worth every penny of the door price and then some. Seriously. Go. You’ll have so much fun.

Hey, that’s why we freelance, right? So we can do fun things whenever we want to, not when we have “time off.” Woo-hoo!
