Essay Contest Second Place: Tessa Garcia (aka Yvonne Contreras)
My Friend Adela
by Tessa Garcia (pen name: Yvonne Contreras)
My friend Adela always has rouge on her lips. She´s not young anymore, so the gentle wrinkles around her large mouth absorb much of the lipstick. She´s thin, tall, blonde and quite a heavy smoker. Her eyes, ¡oh god!, how could I possibly describe them? Think of dreams, bring to your mind the most poetic fantasies you can. Imagine many colours at one time and you will at least have a hint of her eyes.
When the night comes, she lightens up. She loves to invite people over and offer them some liquour, maybe a scotch. Her friends adore her, both women and men. For she is quick, witty, and has an energy which is not often seen. “To have children is absolutely terrible, but not having them is even worse”, I heard her say. She likes to wear green dresses that always look old fashioned on her. But nobody seems to notice, or maybe, nobody cares. She has such an inviting warmth in her face, specially her eyes, that people around her seems to smoothen out. Besides this, too often she ends up the evening being very drunk, and a friend of hers (me) has to help her to her room; this undoubtedly makes her very sympathetic, and a bit vulnerable too.
Adela is a dreamer, she thinks a lot about the small misteries of life. She loves candles, gothic literature and Barbara Cartland. She also cooks like crap. The only dish she knows how to cook very well is ceviche, a Chilean mixture of fish, onions and lemon. She is a huge observer of human nature, destiny, fate. And she is scaringly smart. Whan you need a piece of advice she´s the best.
She would know what will make you better, and tell you things about yourself that nobody dares, with kindness. She makes people laugh, because she says terrible truths in a very gracious and as-a-matter-of-fact way. She talks very fast and sometimes you don´t understand what she´s saying. Nobody does. And you think that whatever she´s muttering is surely hilarious and would make you laugh so much. She came out from a novel. A beautiful novel which will certainly remain unwritten.
