The Most Important Meal of the Day May Be a Weight Loss Secret Weapon
Breakfast. You know you’re supposed to be eating it, but are you doing it? Are you getting something in your stomach first thing every morning to jump-start your metabolism and give you the energy to get started on your day?
A new study published by Blackwell reports a possible connection between weight loss/maintenance and eating cereal for breakfast:
There is growing evidence that people who eat breakfast regularly tend to be slimmer than those who skip breakfast. However, this is not a consistent finding and it is not true for all types of breakfast. Also the relationship with breakfast can disappear in studies when adjusted for breakfast cereal consumption, suggesting it is breakfast cereal that is driving the association. This systematic review, therefore, looked specifically at the relationship between breakfast cereal consumption and weight. …
…This systematic review considered whether the relationship between breakfast cereal consumption and weight is likely to be mediated either through lower energy intakes or higher energy expenditures. …
…There is consistent evidence of an association between breakfast cereal consumption and a healthy weight, but limited evidence for any proposed mechanism that would point to it being a causal relationship.
So the takeaway is that even though they can’t prove that eating cereal causes healthy weight, the two factors are consistently associated, or present simultaneously. Honestly, that’s good enough for me!
What’s your favorite breakfast cereal?

There are many compelling reasons to have breakfast every day - from improved energy, mood and alertness, through to weight loss (and maintenance). And yet, still so many people don’t eat this meal - I read a report today that estimated 30% of people, here in Australia don’t eat breakfast each day.
Personally I’m a big muesli and porridge fan. I like to be able to vary the content and texture of my breakfast, so to these two I’ll add a combination of yoghurt, fruit, nuts and seeds, maple syrup, LSA powder and so on.
