Grey’s Anatomy Spin-Off: Ditzy, but Doomed?

by Kristen King on May 7th, 2007

The lead is a woman and they’re all doctors, so this definitely works as women’s health topic, don’t you think?  ;]

If you haven’t seen last week’s 2-hour Grey’s Anatomy yet, you probably want to get the spoilers summary at Grey’s Anatomy News, or maybe hold off on reading this post until you catch up with everything on the good old Tivo.  I’d hate to ruin any surprises for you.

And sadly, the biggest surprise in this episode is not that Susan died (though that was admittedly very surprising, and Thatcher did not take it well), but that something can be “even sillier and more sex-obsessed than the original,” as Alessandra Stanley said in a New York Times TV review on Saturday.  That something is the new spin-off show starring Kate Walsh as Addison, but southern California style.

According to the preview we got in this particular episode, “southern California style” is melodramatic, mentally unbalanced, and promiscuous.  Take, for example, Amy Brenneman’s character, a therapist on the verge of utter psychological breakdown.  How exactly is this supposed to entertain, educate, or inspire me?  It was all I could do not to throw my Oreos and milk at her the other night.  And don’t forget Addison, who’s becoming less and less of the strong, bitingly funny surgeon we all loved to hate in the beginning.

What is happening to women on television?  And how is it affecting us in real life?  What do you think?
