How to Get a Personal Trainer Without Breaking the Bank

by Kristen King on February 1st, 2007

Get Professional Trainer Without Paying Full PriceDon’t let a tight budget keep you from having a tight body. There are lots of great ways to reap the benefits of having a personal trainer without shelling out the big bucks for it. iVillage offers three suggestion for “shrinking your waistline, not your wallet”:

  • Team up with a friend to split the cost of training sessions and get twice the benefit at half the cost.

You’ll both be getting professional instruction, but you’ll also be learning how to help one another when the trainer isn’t around. And won’t it be nice to have a friend encouraging you when your gym guru is pushing you to the limit?

  • Hire a junior trainer rather than the most experienced trainer in the gym.

Just because he or she is newer to training doesn’t mean you won’t still get excellent guidance and the help you need–but it does mean that you won’t have to pay top dollar. Think of it as going to the beauty school for a trim instead of racking up a huge bill at Ooo-La-La Salon.

  • Use a nonhuman trainer.

And I don’t mean one of those people who spend so much time at the gym that they look like they’re made of plastic. I’m talking about a video or audio program that will help you get through your workout and teach you the techniques you need. Nike has a new line of shoes that coordinate with your iPod to keep track of your running distance and offer encouragement along the way, and iTunes and other services offer a ton of downloadable workouts.

What are your ideas?

Well all that sounds fine….but the bottom line is that you get what you pay for. Instead of investing in another pair of shoes…invest in youself! Get a real pro, get results, and change your life style. With a rockin’ body…..you’ll look hot no matter what! The best investment you can make in yourself, why waste time and money (in the long run) by training with a clown who was certified on-line for $50????????????????

Thanks for the professional-trainer perspective, Steve. I don’t think any of the lively women who frequent this site are going to be hiring back-alley personal trainers anytime soon, so don’t worry too much about that. ;] I do think it’s worth pointing out that, “less expensive” doesn’t have to mean “totally incompetent,” though, and everyone who charges “real pro” rates isn’t necessarily better at his or her job than someone who costs less.

The best way to find out whether you’re choosing the right trainer is to do your homework. Talk to his or her other clients, get recommendations from friends, and do a few trial sessions before committing.
