A Slice of Kristen’s Lively Life: My Puppy the Evil Genius

by Kristen King on January 11th, 2007

This pet is having a negative effect on my mental health today!Oh, sure, Pickles the pug looks sleepy and adorable and innocent, but it’s all an act. Remember that post from the other day, Do Pets Have a Negative Effect on Your Health?? Well, this pet, and the cutie black-and-white kitty behind her (Isabel), are seriously making me crazy!

They have a system, these two. Isabel jumps up on the table/counter/dresser/whatever, and knocks down anything that’s edible. Then, she and Pickles split it if it’s something they both want. Otherwise, Isabel helps herself to something else up high and lets Pickles go to town on the floor. Two weeks ago, Pickles ate half a bag of marshmallows. I learned the other day that Isabel has been helping herself to the bread that sits on top of the fridge. Today, well, today was the kicker.

Today, Isabel gave Pickles a chocolate chip granola bar that my husband forgot on the counter when he left for work. While I was upstairs working, Pickles carried the granola bar to the couch, where she managed to unwrap it and EAT THE WHOLE THING. I found her looking very happy, surrounded by shedded granola bar wrapper.

This, my friends, is why my pets are making me nuts: I’m afraid to turn my back on the stove while making dinner, to walk away from a beverage without securing it under a book, to leave the butter dish on the counter. I also worry about them getting into things, like the time Zoe (not pictured) closed herself in the washing machine.

This, my friends, is my lively life.

My cat and dog used to have the same system! Sounds like those two are keeping you on your toes - there has to be a health benefit to increased alertness, right?

Hey, at least they work together instead of fighting! ;)

We’ve never had two against us before. The rabbits don’t put up much of a fuss…except for the great escape and the dog is pretty dim witted.

our previous dog would get into everything…and helped herself to my SIL’s chocolate candy. not fun…she didn’t realize that dogs aren’t supposed to have chocolate.

Renee, your story makes me think of my dog growing up. One year at Easter, we put all of the Easter baskets in the middle of the dining room table before we went to a neighbor’s house for breakfast. When we got back, all of the baskets were empty and there were little pieces of foil everywhere — and Rocky looked very, very guilty. He also ate a stick of butter straight from the butter dish, and a jelly donut off my dresser. Too smart for his own good, that one. :]

P.S. Sydney, I’d call it hypervigilance. Don’t they have drugs for that? ;]

Kristen – Sounds like your pets add a bit of charm to your life, pets are great like that.

Barbara, I’m not sure charm is the right word, but they definitely add something to it! I love them and can’t imagine life without them, but every now and then, like when they eat granola bars or pee on my bed, I try for a few seconds.

    kk :]

Wow. It’s a wonder Pickles didn’t get really, really sick. Did you know that certain types/quantities of chocolate can make your dog very sick and/or kill him/her? There’s lots of info about this on the Web. Scary stuff! Glad she’s OK. Keep us posted on her antics.
