Oatmeal for Breakfast? It’s Not Just for Grade-Schoolers
What did you eat for breakfast this morning? In 2003, BBC News reported that eating breakfast is critical to good health.
[U.S. researchers] believe skipping the first meal of the day increases the chances of becoming obese, developing diabetes or even having a heart attack.
Says a WebMD article called “Assessing the Benefits of Breakfast,”
People who ate a hearty breakfast containing more than one-quarter of their daily calories — usually in the form of a ready-to-eat breakfast cereal — consumed less fat and more carbohydrates during the day than people who skimped on food in the morning. Breakfast eaters had a higher intake of essential vitamins and minerals. Plus they generally had lower serum cholesterol levels, which are associated with reduced danger of heart disease.
But what’s the right kind of breakfast to maximize the meal’s health benefits?
Something is better than nothing, since anything you eat early in the day will get your metabolism rolling, but some things are better than others.
- Jelly donut? Okay.
- No-sugar-added jelly on an English muffin? Better.
- Strawberry Toaster Strudel? Okay.
- Fresh strawberries over corn flakes? Better.
- Bowl of Lucky Charms? Okay.
- Bowl of homemade oatmeal? Better.
And speaking of oatmeal (you had to know this was coming!), did you know that eating a cup of oatmeal a day can lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of certain cancers, and decrease your likelihood of developing heart disease and diabetes? It’s true! Read more about the Health Benefits of Oatmeal at A 2 Z of Health, Beauty & Fitness, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.

HEALTH magazine just had an article about the different yummy toppings to put on oatmeal. since I’m not a fan of the crud (although I know it’s healthy and I “should” eat it) — generally I pile on SEVERAL toppings — fruit AND brown sugar AND honey AND cinnamon — you get the idea.

I usually do brown sugar, a touch of butter, and skim milk. Sometimes I’ll add raisins, sliced bananas, sliced berries, or chunks of apple. I’m all about the fruit, yo. :]

Normally we stick to a fruit-and-yogurt-only breakfast (occasional exceptions for bacon because bacon is the food of gods!) but I we did oatmeal topped with fruit this morning after I read this the other day. Oatmeal on a cold winter morning is the food of gods, too.
