Losing the Holiday Pounds

Sink Reflections: Overwhelmed? Disorganized? Living in Chaos? The FlyLady's Simple FLYing Lessons Will Show You How to Get Your Home and Your Life in Order--and It All Starts with Shining Your Sink!
Everywhere I look, there are articles on losing weight before Christmas. Here’s one — The Dream Diet: Lose Weight While You Sleep. And here’s another: How to Get Through the Holidays Without Weight Gain.

Well, I’m working on losing a different kind of weight these days. (Yeah, yeah, yeah … my body weight will always need some adjustment.) I’m finally letting the FlyLady rule my roost this month, and I’m losing the household clutter. YES! Have you tried this lately?

When I went down to the basement to pull out our Christmas decorations, I decided it was time to start hauling off the junk we don’t need or use. Instead of feeling guilty about it, FlyLady tells me to think of it as blessing someone. I’m going to bless plenty of people with our old clothes, toys, houseware, and Christmas decorations.

As I box things up, they’re going directly to the trunk of my car — no second thoughts. I’ll get a donation receipt from the Salvation Army which I’ll keep for taxes. Most of our stuff is not worth the hassle of e-bay or a yard sale — and the profits will go to a worthy organization.

It’s a great feeling to be set free from clutter. It holds us in bondage when we spend more time shuffling our junk around than being with the people we love. I would never have the energy to do this if I hadn’t read South Beach Diet and learned why sugar is my mortal enemy.

If you’re decluttering as well and need some moral support — I highly recommend Marla Cilley’s books and website!

P.S. Getting rid of your household junk burns calories too!

Did you know that seniors are more at risk for complications and death from large scale weight-loss surgery.

The first large-scale review of weight-loss surgeries performed on older adults suggests bariatric procedures should generally be limited to people younger than age 65, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found. This story appears in today’s issue of HULIQ at http://www.huliq.com/219/seniors-more-at-risk-for-complications-death-from-large-scale-weight-loss-surgery

    Hi Gratchen,

Thanks for this insight. I know some people who have had WLS successfully, but they were all under 65. My mother had a colleague who died from complications following the surgery — she was in her mid-50s.

People should definitely be aware there are risks involved — that’s why I hope my message here is that it’s best to try to lose weight by the natural means of improving diet and increasing exercise.

    I appreciate your advice! :)

    Hi Heather
Yes! de-cluttering is pure delight! We are downsizing, and giving ourselves the gift of space as we prepare to move.
Getting rid of extra stuff is just plain enlightening!
    Whoohoo!
    blessings
