Drink water, lose weight

by Heather on October 27th, 2006

A quick refresher on how drinking water throughout the day helps you lose weight:

1. It increases your metabolism.
2. It speeds up elimination, giving you an energy boost (so you’ll move more and burn more calories.)
3. It helps you feel full so you won’t eat as much.
4. If you drink water instead of sugary sodas, you’ll consume fewer calories.

Write down every time you drink a glass of water, and you’ll feel rewarded for your efforts. Exercising for half an hour will make you thirsty so you’ll crave water naturally. Go for nine glasses or bottles of water a day. Coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks don’t count!

I have never understood that whole “caffeinated beverages don’t count towards your water intake” business. Would you please explain that perhaps in a separate post? I know caffeine is a dieuretic so you eliminate more than you take in, but you are still taking in liquid. To me “doesn’t count” means you would be in the same health situation at the end of the day if you drank 8 glasses of tea or drank zero glasses of anything, and that just can’t be.

Please help me understand why caffeinated beverages don’t count toward your water intake.

Thanks for your comment here, GetSheila. I’ve been looking up some information to try to answer your question, which I’ll do in a new post.

Basically, the experts don’t all agree — but what it “boils” down to is this: your body needs liquid to function properly. Water is the perfect source of liquid. Sure, you can get it from coffee, tea, soda, fruit juice — or whatever — but you’re also intaking things your body doesn’t need: too much caffeine can lead to anxiety problems, too much sugar or sugar substitutes aren’t good for you, etc.

Water contains nothing your body can’t use! No calories, no additives. And it can also help you lose weight if you’re filling up on water instead of higher calorie drinks.

If you’re dehydrated, your body will let you know in a variety of ways, none of them positive.

    Hope this helps!

I have been drinking a gallon of water daily for the past 4 weeks and completely cut the coke and coffee. I feel a dramatic difference in my skin and I actually sweat more and burn more fat. I have lost 15 lbs in two weeks by exercising one hour a day, sweating like I have never had before since it was hard for me to sweat and now I’m down to a 145 lbs in just TWO WEEKS. It does take hard work but I definitely love it. It’s a whole new me and water is the key to this successful story. I am sticking with water even though I’m not thirsty, I make sure to finish that gallon!

To successfully lose weight, you must carry out
a plan to balance your caloric intake with exercise.
Ideally, dieting should be done by eating a nutritionally
balanced, low-calorie diet and increasing physical activity.

Hi, I have been on a diet for 10 days ,this is my eleventh day and I have lost 11 pounds. I have been drinking a gallon of water daily and walking on a treadmill. I started out with 500 steps, twice a day 4 days ago. I am adding 500 steps daily until I reach 10,000 steps a day. I eat better and watch what I eat, more fruits and veggies, no sodas. I thank God for letting me read about the water…it works..it will help you lose weigh. I am 52 years old and did weigh in at 239 1/2 but I am on my way to a new me….
