Stress and the Effects on Women’s Weight Gain

by Heather on October 12th, 2006

I read a few articles over the weekend about our killer enemy, cortisol. Our bodies release this hormone when we’re stressed. Research has shown the effects of cortisol result in weight gain around our mid-sections.

Yale scientists discovered:

If women under stress did nothing to alleviate the tension, the cortisol levels remained high, leading to even more fat deposits settling around the mid-section.

The best way to reduce stress is to exercise. Not only does it lower the levels of cortisol, you also sweat and release the build-up of toxins in your system. If you can do nothing else today, at least try to walk for 15 minutes. Think of releasing that killer cortisol from your system that settles around your waist and rear.

For me, it’s a whole new way of thinking — instead of calming my nerves by eating something sweet and comforting, I must reprogram my brain to crave the relaxation that comes from walking or exercising. You can too.
