Heart Attack Symptoms: Be Prepared

by Heather on September 12th, 2006

According to the American Heart Association, more than 330,000 people die each year of a heart attack before reaching a hospital. Web MD reported a new study released from the University of Berlin that reveals there are possible warning signs of cardiac arrest that “may offer a window of opportunity to prevent sudden cardiac death.”

Do you know the early warning signs of a heart attack? They include:

  • Chest pain lasting from 20 minutes to 10 hours, especially 30 minutes before the cardiac arrest
  • Breathlessness, nausea or vomiting.
  • Dizziness or fainting.

The Berlin study researchers suggest that family members and caregivers of people at high risk for heart attack should learn to recognize these dangerous symptoms and be able to perform CPR or use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

I’m realizing that I haven’t had a decent CPR class since I was about a junior in high school. Reading this article makes me want to go take a class at my local hospital. You never know when you might be able to save someone’s live by performing CPR while the emergency team is on the way.
