Physical Therapy Graduate
I wanted to update you on my physical therapy that I’ve been going through since my knee injury back in early July. I “graduated” last week! My physical therapist said I’d met all the goals he’d mapped out, such as regaining my strength, agility, and confidence. Now I’ve got a home program of exercises that I should do three times a week to help prevent future injuries.
Going through physical therapy was an interesting experience and, dare I say, life-changing. Like Susan Thacker mentioned in her column on Defining Moments, this injury was one for me. I learned that good health is not something I’ll ever take for granted, and I’ve reached an age where I have to be proactive with staying in shape.
I definitely was able to see the down side of poor knees — I saw so many people with scars from knee replacement surgery. I found out that this is common with aging, especially in people who are obese and inactive; their joints just wear out. Also, there’s the other extreme — people who exercise TOO much, such as top athletes and marathon runners who run on pavement, are also in danger of needing knee replacement surgery someday. I definitely will be looking for low-impact ways to stay in shape. Those knee scars look scary — and some people end up with a permanent limp.
