A Defining Moment, by Susan Thacker

Author Susan Thacker is our guest today at Lively Women. She wrote an awesome book on healthy eating called Supper Swapping, which she’ll be back to tell us more about tomorrow, along with some fun nutritional tips. Come on in, Susan!
Recently, my husband and I joined Weight Watchers. We were sitting in a room with about thirty ladies. My husband was the only male in the room. I have to admit, I enjoyed his side comments to me. The speaker said, “Did you have a defining moment that caused you to go on a diet?” He whispered to me under his breath, “I had a defining decade.” He said it with a sigh in a Steve Martin manner.
How many of us have had defining moments? Mine was when I was driving in the car and my roll of fat on my torso felt uncomfortable. It was then that I decided that I couldn’t be this uncomfortable. People say, “You’re not fat.” So, as I start to lift up my shirt just enough to show my roll of fat (to a good friend, of course), my teenaged daughter grimaces and says, “Mom!”
I’ve been banned from proving why my clothes are too tight.
I’m convinced that the only way for us to lose weight and keep it off is to enjoy the process. We cannot feel deprived. We should not feel hungry. If we view weight lose as punishment we may not be able to stick to it. So how do we get into a routine of eating healthful meals, feeling full and enjoying it? Making a list of healthful substitutions is one start. Finding a workout and meal-swapping partner is another way. Adding more aerobics into your routine is another way to speed up your metabolism. I’ve read that it’s better to exercise 20 minutes for three times a day, after each meal than to exercise one hour, one time a day. So I take breaks from my routine.
If you have had a defining moment, decide that you have had enough. I’ll be back tomorrow to offer you some nutritional tips. Find a friend with whom you can be accountable in setting your goals. Remember, my ideas are not substitution for seeing a doctor. They are just tips to get you started eating healthful foods and loving it.
Thanks, Susan!

[…] Going through physical therapy was an interesting experience and, dare I say, life-changing. Like Susan Thacker mentioned in her column on Defining Moments, this injury was one for me. I learned that good health is not something I’ll ever take for granted, and I’ve reached an age where I have to be proactive with staying in shape. […]
