Burning Calories in the Garden
I can’t believe it. I’ve only been on the South Beach Diet for two days, and I feel like a completely different person. I’ve got so much energy, I can hardly sit down to blog.
Instead, I’ve been out taking walks, swimming with my kids in the pool (instead of watching), and now I’m heading out to pick some squash from our garden. I checked the online calculator here, and I’ll be burning more calories while I pick produce and pull weeds. woohoo!
I’ve started the strict Phase I of the diet, which lasts two weeks. Here’s what I can’t eat: bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, fruit, or anything containing bad carbs or sugar. This is totally temporary — I’m just ridding my body of those things that have a high number on the glycemic index. I’m not kidding when I say that I’ve LIVED off those carbs for most of my adult life.
But in saying NO to food choices that wreak havoc on my blood sugar levels, I’m saying YES to this fantastic energy that I didn’t know I had. I’m not making a big deal of it around my family and friends — they hardly know I’m “dieting.” But instead of skipping breakfast, I’m enjoying an egg and turkey bacon with my morning coffee (no sugar), and I’ve been wolfing down humongous salads with nuts, cheese, olives, and tomatoes … and drinking lots of water. I’m not worrying about the scale for now; I’m having way too much fun in the garden!

Sensible salads are the way to go: fill them up with nuts, fruit, protein, fish, and lots of diff veggies and you’ve got a great meal. i love all the veggie bacon and turkey choices out there now too.
