A Novel About Weight Loss Surgery
I just finished reading a really fun novel that touches on the topic of weight loss surgery, A Stitch in Time, by Allison Bottke. The main character, Dee Decker, loses 150 pounds in a year after having gastric bypass surgery.
It’s interesting that this is the second book I’ve read in the past month where I got an up-close look at life after WLS. I reviewed Susan Maria Leach’s Before & After here, and that introduced me to this whole concept.
If you’ve ever considered WLS, this novel will show you what it’s like to live post-surgery, where you must be aware of every morsel you put into your body. In A Stitch in Time, Dee works in the glamorous world of high-end fundraising, and she undergoes a whirlwind of mid-life changes. With her new shape and attitude, she’s ready to take on southern California, where she lives, as well as the world.
Author Allison Bottke also underwent WLS and lost over a hundred pounds. You can read an interview with her here, as well as visit her personal blog. What I’ve gleaned from these books is that WLS is a drastic measure, but the reason it’s effective is because it forces people to eat smaller portions. Can you do this without surgery? I highly recommend both of these books, as well as this site if you’re considering WLS.
