Raising Healthy Eaters

The first Thursday of every month, b5media’s Science & Health channel bloggers join together to write about a common topic (you can find a list of the blogs in the Science & Health Channel over in the far right sidebar).
This month our topic is “Children,” so I immediately thought of this great book I picked up at the beach last month, Raising Healthy Eaters. It’s written by Dr. Henry Legere, who is a pediatrician specializing in childhood obesity.
I’ve noticed my eating habits have taken a nose dive since becoming a parent. The past few years, I’ve even started to think maybe French fries really are a decent vegetable — and doesn’t green jello count for something green?
Well, this type of thinking has now settled around my hips — and I know poor eating habits can lead to even worse disease for both me and my family. Dr. Legere’s book offers 100 inspiring tips and recipes to help us get back on track.
Here’s Tip #22: “Be a Positive Role Model.” Dr. Legere writes:
More than two-thirds of the obese children I see in my clinic are brought in by obese parents. Because healthy eating is a lifestyle rather than a fad, it needs to be a family affair that is instituted at an early age … Remember teaching your kids to be healthy eaters for life starts with you, so buckle up and get ready for the ride.
If you’ve got a link to a recipe your kids love, I’d love to check it out!
