Physical Wellness for the Men in Your Life

by Heather on June 18th, 2006

It’s Father’s Day. The day we celebrate the men in our lives. Since our physical wellness is also tied in with our emotional and spiritual state, today’s a good day to sit down and think about how we show love to these special men.

Love is an action. Yeah — the words are important too — but it’s the things we actually do that show someone we love them. Words come easy for me. I plan on calling my Dad today and telling him I love him, and of course I’ll do the same for my husband.

If you’re feeling run-down, could you be harboring any grudges against the men in your life? Maybe this is the year you can let them go. Take the action of forgiving someone, and you’ll feel a release inside that will help you move toward meeting your physical goals. It works. Our physical energy is tied in with our emotional energy — so if we’re feeling angry or resentful at someone, it’s going to zap our energy.

One way to show love to the men in your life is to make sure they get the check-ups they need to stay in good health. WebMd’s article, Routine Maintenance for Men is written to men, and might be something you could print out and stick in with your Father’s Day card:

When it comes to cars, you know when to change the oil, rotate the tires, and have the front end aligned. But you may not be as diligent about caring for your body as you are about your car.

The body needs routine maintenance, no matter how many miles you have on it. Some men never get that care, and end up breaking down on the road, so to speak. For many that’s because they have no dealership to remind them when they’re due for service.

The article quotes Rick Kellerman, MD, president-elect, American Academy of Family Physicians. He offers a “routine maintenance” schedule for checkups and tests that will keep a man’s body in good running order. The schedule includes what men need to take care of daily, monthly, every six months, annually, every 5 years, and every 10 years.

Here’s a great way to show your man you love him — make an appointment for him to see a doctor to get a wellness check-up. He may not like it — but he’ll know you love him because you want him to be around as long as possible.
